International museological collaboration Indonesia and The Netherlands
18 – 22 December 2023
Earlier this year the Indonesian Ministry for Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MoECRT) set up the Indonesian Heritage Agency. IHA is placed under the Directorate for Culture led by the Director-General, and unites 17 museums and 34 heritage sites across Indonesia under one management. This includes National Museum Indonesia, National Gallery Indonesia, Fort Vredenburg, and UNESCO world heritage sites Borobudur and Sangiran.
Rol of Indonesian Heritage Agency (IHA)
IHA aims to centralize the management of the national museums and heritage sites to elevate the overall quality and efficiency, as well as the public services these cultural assets provide. The transformation of IHA and its facilities will be carried out in various phases in the future with the ambition to become a leading heritage organization in the Southeast Asia region.
Ambition
IHA’s ambition to fundamentally transform the museum and heritage field requires a tremendous amount of expertise in the field of the management of collections, culture, and art. Against this background, expertise in core museum capacities—in collections management, conservation, curatorial research, art history, digitization, education, and much more—needs to be exchanged.
Museum training
Given the ambition to professionalize and modernize IHA’s museum practice, The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and the Reinwardt Academy have been asked to help make this transition. The restitution of their cultural heritage has strengthened the ambition of the museum to reach an international audience. A joint working week will take place in Jakarta from 18 to 22 December 2023 to shape the museum training program.
